Defect Analysis

If a coating fails before its expected lifespan, a coating inspector (CI) is brought in to perform a defect analysis. This requires an in-depth investigation, with the CI using experience, knowledge and high-tech analytical tools to establish the root cause of the failure.

The CI has to perform a thorough investigation, taking into consideration all the environmental, quality, physical and process aspects that contributed to the coating project and the coating’s failure. Simple observation and specific questioning are important skills to apply to extract as much information as possible.

A qualified CI’s knowledge and experience of coating fundamentals, application techniques and the characteristics of specific defects are vital in making a correct judgment and recommending appropriate remedial action
